Cash For Cars | Los Angeles:
How Do Dealers Evaluate Your Vehicle's Condition And
How Much Cash Your Car Is Worth?
Cash for cars dealers and used car professionals use different standards but most of these follow similar guidelines. The terms below reflect these guidelines used by professionals in the auto-buying industry: Keep in mind that the amount of cash for cars offered will depend chiefly on how clean an in proper condition your car is. Most reputable dealers will not want a car in less than "clean" condition- as described below. With that in mind, here are the general categories:
Almost New Used Car
The odometer reading indicates below average-per-year mileage. Used cars that are almost new show no significant flaws or body/paint blemishes and display a careful history of good maintenance by the owner. The engine compartment looks free of any dust and oil buildup and all hoses and sheet metal retain a newer look. The rear trunk compartment looks new without any visible paint dings or scratches. All tools and accessories are present and accounted-for in this compartment.
The spare tire looks unused and the interior upholstery and dashboard look ultra clean with little visible wear. An almost new use car has a detailed service history. The cash for cars expectation on this type of car should favor you, the seller, but often the seller loses much of the value of this type of car to a savy dealer in a lower-than-expected trade-in..
A used car that is extra clean typically has below-average mileage for its age. This type of car has no exterior paint scratches or dings but otherwise shows nothing requiring any bodywork. Overall appearance is that of a newer car and the interior compartment shows very little wear. The engine compartment shows no heat damage, no oil/dirt buildup and no weathering or corrosion on metal surfaces. This type of car is old enough to have had several service calls but remains in top condition. Service history is usually available.
Clean Used Car
Has average mileage for its age. Car has very few exterior flaws. May have a few small defects in paint — small dings or scratches (less than $200 in repair cost). Shows very little wear in interior. Under hood area is clean and trunk is clean and free of damage. Supplied tools are probably present. Car has been maintained but is probably due for its last major service. Service history is usually available.
Average
The cash for car ratio shrinks at this condition level. Has average mileage for its age. The vehicle probably has small flaws — door dings, chips, scratches — on several body panels. Shows typical wear in interior as befits mileage and age. Usually shows some paint oxidation/discoloring and/or wear on flooring mats/carpets. The engine area shows some oil and dust/mud buildup, but otherwise no signs of needing repair. Trunk may be dirty and may show some wear on the carpet or liner. Accessories like tools, etc, are often missing. Car has received some maintenance but records are incomplete.
Rough
Any legitimate cash for car expectation does not exist with cars in this condition. Average to high odometer readings for a used vehicle of this age. This type of used car shows significant wear both inside and out. May have damage to one or more body panels or interior. Light accessories and bumpers show need of repair. Condition is that of a typical five-year-old car on the road in most American cities. Car has received some maintenance but is generally neglected and records are missing or incomplete.
